UFO draining the sun?

Little green men, greys, and other alien ideas seemed to a far stretch to me. Not that I don't believe there is alien life out there in the universe. In fact I think its statistically impossible for there not to be. I just never really bought the idea that they would bother to make their way here to kill cows and ass probe us. Over the years I have scoured  the internet in a vain attempt to find anything that could prove to me, beyond a shadow of a doubt that extraterrestrial life was visiting our universe. I've searched endless "UFO expert" sites, tons of youtube videos, and spent countless hours trying to find a scrap of anything that might give me hope that there is a chance of visitation. Yes I am a self professed geek...but a video I saw tonight may have changed my views for good. I don't pretend to understand what I've seen in these videos. And after digging myself, holy shit! you need to see this for yourself.

This is the original video I watched. As a subscriber to Wowforreeel I've seen many interesting things, some convincing, some not so much. Until this video... the final segment was what caught my eye. Just for a bit of background Wowforreeel, is the host and the name of the channel that covers ufos, strange events, aliens, Nibiru , anomalies, and other strangeness. Very interesting, so subscribe. So this video begins like some of videos do, with some theatrics..hard to exp[lain just watch..take note of final segment.

Scientists have been naming species after famous people for a long time. For example, Thomas Jefferson has an extinct giant ground sloth named after him. Mark Knopfler rates a dinosaur. Frank Zappa has multiple animals sharing his namesake, including a spider, a jellyfish and a mudskipper.

Now joining those hallowed ranks is one of the Great Old Ones. Scientists at the University of British Columbia and the University of Florida bequeathed two new genera of symbiotic protists their own dread names: Cthulhu and Cthylla.

The protists, not surprisingly, have a lot of tentacles. (Or, well, they have tentacle-like appendages. In fact, if they didn't have tentacle-like appendages, I would have been writing this column berating the researchers for their oversight). But, as the researchers say in the abstract to their paper, published in PLOS One: "Both genera have […] an anterior bundle flagella (and likely a single posterior flagellum) that emerge slightly subanteriorly and have a distinctive beat pattern. Cthulhu is relatively large and has a distinctive bundle of over 20 flagella whereas Cthyllais smaller, has only 5 anterior flagella."

The critters live inside termite guts and help the termites digest the cellulose in wood. I had no idea that R'lyeh was situated in the body cavity of an insect, rather than at the bottom of the South Pacific.

The Lovecraftian purists out there are probably looking at the second genus and muttering "bullsh*t" to themselves--Cthylla (apparently Cthulhu's youngest progeny) was not created by H.P. Lovecraft. She was invented in 1975 by writer Brian Lumley. I'm not going to get into a nerd-rage fueled throwdown over the nomenclature and rightness of using a latter-day addition to the mythos in the same paper as the hallowed original. I'm just going to use this as an excuse to bust out my copy of At The Mountains of Madness and call in sick tomorrow for work.

Synopsis 

Miskatonic University has a long-whispered reputation of being strongly connected to all things occult and supernatural. "Lord of Tears" an upcoming horror thriller

Thrills, chills,tension and the spilling of blood. This film will have it all!

Plotline-
Set in the Scottish highlands a man named James Findlay (played by Euan Douglas) must confront his fears and the demons of his past including a menacing presence known only as "The Owl Man" by returning to his childhood home after the death of his mother.

Reviewing the story and trailer, the"Lord of Tears" has that kind of Lovecraft feel to it by way of the protagonist questioning and fighting for sanity. A bit of Fall of the House of Usher with an ancient stalker creature that we only know as " The Owl Man"makes for a great story and film formula. The creators of Lord of Tears share that it is based on ancient legends ( Celtic -the Slender Man and others). Some other research shows that there actually is (allegedly) an "Owl Man" in more modern legend. This just adds to the Lord of Tears creepiness. The film has the mystique that only British horror can have. Often imitated by American horror but never quite hitting that classy scare the hell out of you as opposed the exploitation style of modern U.S. horror cinema.
 
On seeing pictures of the Owl Man (ie Moloch an ancient evil entity of mythology) it brings to mind the creepiness of Nosferatu with those scary long arms and claws. On top of that add the cold supernatural nature (and stare!) of owls, the creature of the night/silent hunter. There was serious  research done and the director even dared travel through the haunt of the alleged Owl Man. Interestingly the film is actually shot where witnesses claim to have seen the creature. Lucky this didn't turn into a Blair Witch Ala The Owl Man real life encounter for the cast and crew! Otherwise this would be a murder investigation instead of a film review!

The film is complete and ready to rock and has a kickstarter to secure release. For anyone that doesn't know, movies cost money to promote and release. Unlike most kickstarters the film is done but they still need the help and funding for final release and will add some extras. You can also check out the Facebook site and show some support for a great film. I for one can't wait to see the final product. Its been awhile since I've seen anything that's got me this excited for quite awhile. -EvS

In a presentation that seems ripped from the Atomic Age, Lockheed Skunkworks says it might be a decade away from producing a power plant based on compact fusion reactors. Unlike current nuclear reactors, all of which use fission, nuclear fusion does not easily produce materials that can be used in nuclear weapons. Fusion reactors also offer better containment, easier shutoff, greater energy efficiency, and less radioactive waste than their fissioning cousins. Of course, with something this promising, there has to be a catch.

Despite the fact that nuclear fusion has been pursued as a power source since the 1950s, fusion reactors have yet to be effectively turned into a regular power source. Tokamaks, the first kind of fusion reactor attempted, generated power by using magnets to squeeze and heat plasma in a giant ring. To make it work, you need a massive donut-shaped vacuum chamber, and it can take years to go from construction to power generation. There has been something of a modern revival of fusion reactor attempts, but most designs still are tremendous undertakings, requiring the kinds of resources and infrastructure that usually only governments can provide. And such coordination efforts are difficult in the best of times and can be an impossible sell during severe financial constraints.

So in part, it's the feasibility of the new Lockheed project that makes it so compelling. Much smaller than traditional fusion attempts, the compact fusion reactor uses a cylinder, not a ring, which makes for a stronger magnetic containment field and leaves fewer points where the energy could escape. This could make for a reactor that's small enough for a truck to transport and still robust enough to generate power for 100,000 homes. Lockheed hopes to have a test model available by 2017, and scale up to regular production by 2022.

Frankenstein’s Army

Here is a film I have been eagerly following since 2006 (sort of) with the teaser trailer that was released in its early incarnation "Worst Case Scenario", directed by Richard Raaphorst. Due to financial issues the plug was pulled, and the idea shelved......

.....But recently it has resurrected in the form or "Frankenstein's Army"and is coming to Rotterdam International Film Festival on January 26th 2013. The film stars Karel Roden who some will recognize from Hellboy or The Borne Supremacy. The Synopsis from IMDB is this:

Toward the end of World War II, Russian soldiers pushing into eastern Germany stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr. Victor Frankenstein. The scientists have used the legendary Frankenstein's work to assemble an army of super-soldiers stitched together from the body parts of their fallen comrades -- a desperate Hitler's last ghastly ploy to escape defeat.

 So you can bet that we creeps in North America and our fiend friends around the globe will be seeing it soon. In the mean time here is some stills and trailers.

The Automatons Are Coming!!!

I recently saw a video which I found slightly disturbing, yet fascinating.....

Necroscope THE MOVIE IS COMING! Who would you cast?

Harry Keogh (born Harry Snaith) is born with the ability to speak to the dead. As he grows up and his power manifests itself, he befriends the dead. From them he learns that death is not the end, that once the bodies die the mind goes on, and the dead continue to do in death what they did in life. From him, the once silent Great Majority learns to communicate amongst themselves, and love him for it. In turn, they offer him their knowledge. From a former maths teacher he discovers his own mathematical genius, and an ex-army sergeant teaches him self-defense.

As the years go by, he has recurring dreams about his mother, dead after an alleged ice-skating accident but in reality murdered by her husband and Harry's stepfather Victor Shukshin. Shukshin is a psychic sensitive, a defector sleeper agent planted by the Soviet E-Branch. In his self-appointed mission to avenge his mother's death, Harry is dragged into a web of espionage (actually, ESPionage) involving the British and Soviet ESP agencies.

This leads to Harry learning to use the Möbius Continuum (from its discoverer, August Ferdinand Möbius himself, at his grave in Leipzig, Germany), which allows him to instantaneously transport himself anywhere in the world, and pits him head to head against Boris Dragosani, a necromancer and fledgling vampire.

Human skin is a hard system to emulate, but that hasn't stopped Stanford scientists from producing a touch-sensitive material that can heal itself at room temperature.

Before we can construct the realistic humanoid robots that populate our most vivid sci-fi-driven dreams, there are a lot of human systems that researchers are going to have to emulate synthetically. Not the least challenging is human skin; filled with nerve endings and able to heal itself over time, our skin serves as both a massive sensory system and a barrier between our innards and the outside world. Now, an interdisciplinary team of Stanford researchers has created the first synthetic material that is both self-healing at room temperature and sensitive to touch--a breakthrough that could be the beginnings of a new kind of robot skin (and in the meantime enjoy much more practical applications like enhanced prosthetics).

The Stanford material is far from the first self-healing plastic or polymer, but it does enjoy some benefits that set it apart. For one, many self-healing materials require some kind of catalyst or special condition to heal up, things like exposure to high temperature or certain spectrums of light. Others can heal up at room temperature, but they generally can only do so once--the act of healing alters their chemical structure such that they cannot do it a second time, much less a third or fourth.

Then, if an analog for skin is what you’re truly looking for, there’s the problem with touch sensitivity. Most plastics, polymers, and such--the primary materials used in self-healing research--are fantastic insulators. But to imbue a material with a sense of touch--and to make it interface with a larger digital system--you really want something conductive. That’s where the Stanford team has really broken new ground. Its material can repair cuts or tears in itself at room temperature multiple times, and it is conductive.

How did the researchers pull it off? They started with a plastic consisting of molecular chains joined by simple hydrogen bonds. This imparts the self-healing ability, as the bonds can be easily broken but also easily reconstituted by simply putting the broken chains back in contact with each other. In the lab, the researchers severed a piece of the material completely, creating two separate halves. After pressing the cut edge back together for just a few seconds, three-quarters of its prior strength had been restored. Within half an hour it returned to nearly 100 percent strength. After 50 such trials, the material still healed up nicely.

Then, to achieve conductivity, the researchers distributed nickel particles throughout their plastic. These nickel particles not only increase the material’s mechanical strength, but also serve as a means for electrons to move through the material, hopping from one particle to the next, creating an electric current. Bending, flexing, or otherwise warping the material changes the distance between the nickel particles, altering the material's resistance to the current. That electrical resistance can be measured to determine the shape of the skin and any pressure being exerted on it.

It’s easy to envision something like this being integrated into future prosthetics to help restore a sense of touch to those missing a limb. More immediately, such a material could be used to sheathe other electronics to give them a self-healing capacity. The findings were published in the November 11 issue of the journal Nature Nanotechnology.
