2012 Horror Movies

Upcoming Horror Movies 2012

While not a complete list this covers a lot!

PROMETHEUS

Synopsis: Ridley Scott, director of 'Alien' and 'Blade Runner,' returns to the genre he helped define. With 'Prometheus' he creates a groundbreaking mythology in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

One of the most anticipated movies will finally hit theatres on June 8th 2012. Apparently not an Alien sequel as a lot of people suspected but still clearly linked to Ridley Scott's Alien franchise. After seeing the stills and the leaked trailer this is definitely a must-see for me.

PIRANHA 3DD

Synopsis: After the events at Lake Victoria, the prehistoric school of bloodthirsty piranhas make their way into a newly opened waterpark.

Get ready for more blood, breasts and bite than ever before when this 3D sequel hits theatres next year.
The release date only says 2012 currently, but keep checking for a more specific date in the near future.
This sequel stars Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames, Danielle Panabaker, Gary Busey and of course David Hasselhoff. See the teaser trailer below.

THE LORDS OF SALEM

Synopsis: Heidi, a blond rock chick, DJs at a local radio station, and together with the two Hermans (Whitey and Munster) forms part of the "Big H Radio Team." A mysterious wooden box containing a vinyl record arrives for Heidi, a gift of the Lords. She assumes it's a rock band on a mission to spread to spread their word. As Heidi and Whitey play the Lords' record, it starts to play backwards, and Heidi experiences a flashback to a past trauma. Later, Whitey plays the Lords' record, dubbing them the Lords of Salem, and to his surprise, the record plays normally and is a massive hit with his listeners. The arrival of another wooden box from the Lords presents the Big H team with free tickets, posters and records to host a gig in Salem. Soon, Heidi and her cohorts are far from the rock spectacle they're expecting. The original Lords of Salem are returning and they're out for blood.

Rob Zombie's movies have been a bit of a mixed bag in my opinion. I think he did a better job on his originals rather than the remakes so let's hope this one turns out good. Stars Clint Howard, Sheri Moon Zombie, Maria Conchita Alonso & Sid Haig. Coming some time in 2012.

THE GREY

Synopsis: In Alaska, an oil drilling team struggle to survive after a plane crash strands them in the wild. Hunting the humans are a pack of wolves who see them as intruders.

Liam Neeson stars in this isolation/survival film which pits man against beast. I don't know about you, but I like Liam Neeson and I like these type of survival movies so suffice to say I'm looking forward to this one.

THE GATE 3D

Synopsis: Three kids release a horde of demons from a hole in their backyard. What follows is a battle between good and evil as the kids struggle to overcome a hell that is literally taking over the Earth.

A 3D remake of the 1987 film which was one of my favorites when I was a kid along with Monster Squad and The Goonies. Alex Winter is directing from a script by Kerric MacDonald and H.R Geiger will be designing creatures for the remake. It's said to be keeping faithful to the original, while bringing the script and fx in line with 21st century sensibilities. Expect a release sometime in 2012.
Here's some of the early concept art.

DUNDERLAND

Synopsis: The year 1695. A young maiden by the name Johanne Nilsdotter is accused of witchcraft. Her persecutors end her life in the bottomless pits of the remote Djupkista waters in the Dunderland valley. In the years to follow, numerous horrendous events and tragedies strike the valley. More than three century's later, the young, aspiring theater director Laura arrives in the Dunderland valley. Together with an ensemble of Norways premier actors she will put up a play on the witch-processes.

This Norwegian film is 'inspired by true events' which probably means that around 5% of it will be true and the rest will be fiction. But from the trailers I've seen it looks pretty cool and creepy so let's hope it's another film to join the ranks of some of the great horror coming out of Europe. Release is set for February 2012.

DRACULA 3D

The synopsis for this film is like a fucking novel, so I won't post it but you can read it here.
Horror legend Dario Argento is directing this 3D take on the classic vampire tale. Rutger Hauer,Asia Argento and Thomas Kretschmann star. No trailer yet but there are plenty of still shots here.
Closest thing to a release date I can find currently is sometime in 2012.

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS

Synopsis: Five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods. Bad things happen.

The premise is one that's been told over and over, but this movie promises to be a 'game changer' so let's just hope it can stay true to its word. The trailer has me convinced that maybe it can. Release date is April 13 2012.

MEN IN BLACK 3D

Synopsis: The MIB duo of Agent Jay (Will Smith) and Agent Kay (Tommy Lee Jones) are back in action. When the world is threatened by an evil alien, Agent Jay travels back in time to 1969, where he teams up with the younger Agent Kay to stop an evil villain named Boris (Jemaine Clement) from destroying the world in the future. Emma Thompson will play take-charge MIB operative Agent Oh, who is monitoring a prison breakout.

I really enjoyed the first MIB, but I thought the second one was a bit of a stinker. Hopefully the third instalment will be a step up. Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, the film will star Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Emma Thompson and Josh Brolin. Release date is set for May 25th 2012.

THE WICKER TREE

Synopsis: Young Christians Beth and Steve, a gospel singer and her cowboy boyfriend, leave Texas to preach door-to-door in Scotland . When, after initial abuse, they are welcomed with joy and elation to Tressock, the border fiefdom of Sir Lachlan Morrison, they assume their hosts simply want to hear more about Jesus. How innocent and wrong they are.

Robin Hardy's companion piece to his cult classic The Wicker Man. THE WICKER TREE stars Sir Christopher Lee, Graham McTavish, Clive Russell & Honeysuckle Weeks. It is set for a January 27th 2012 release from Anchor Bay.

SIX DEGREES OF HELL

The 'scariest movie of 2012' has me really excited. I just hope it doesn't disappoint because that's a pretty big claim to make especially at this early point. But after seeing all of the stills and the trailer I do have faith that this will be great movie even if it doesn't scare the shit out of me.
SIX DEGREES OF HELL is directed by Joe Raffa, written by Harrison Smith and stars Corey Feldman, Jill Whelan, Brian Anthony Wilson, Joe Raffa, David J. Bonner, Brian Gallagher, Nicole Cinaglia, Ashley Sumner and more. Expect an October 2012 release.

Synopsis: Six individuals are caught up in a supernatural perfect storm as an evil lays claim to one of them while threatening to tear apart the soul of a small Pennsylvania town.

REC 3: GENESIS

The original REC was a fantastic movie in my opinion and REC 2 was a great follow up. Hopefully bringing the series out of the apartment building will bring an entirely new angle to it. REC 3: GENESIS is due out in Spain on March 30 2012.

Synopsis: “The original REC crew are back, ready to submit their ensemble cast to another fight for survival against the zombie infection. This time to the backdrop of an original soundtrack. The new chapter will see the film “open up” by using a more traditional cinematographic style. However, the film’s roots have not been forgotten, and viewers will still be immersed in the action watching certain events unfold through the eye of the video camera. The action in REC 3 GENESIS encompasses the events of the first two films and after the sense of claustrophobia previously experienced.

The action now takes place miles away from the original location and partly in broad daylight, giving the film an entirely fresh yet disturbing new reality. The infection has left the building. In a clever twist that draws together the plots of the first two movies, this third part of the saga also works as a decoder to uncover information hidden in the first two films and leaves the door open for the final installment the future, REC 4 Apocalypse.“

TOTAL RECALL

Synopsis: As the nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai vie for supremacy, a factory worker (Farrell) begins to suspect that he's a spy, though he is unaware which side of the fight he's on.

This remake is said to be more faithful to the book "We Can Remember it For You Wholesale" than the original and a lot different to the original film. Len Wiseman is directing. Stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale,  Jessica Biel & Bill Nighy. Expect to see it in theatres August 2012.

SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D

Synopsis: Heather Mason and her father have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn't fully understand, Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by horrific nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she's not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her forever.

I've always been a fan of the Silent Hill games (well most of them) and I thought that the first movie was pretty well done, but it was still a bit disappointing compared to the games. Hopefully this sequel (loosely based on the game Silent Hill 3) can improve on the original, and as long as it's available in 2D I'll be watching it. And Pyramid Head will be making a return.
Stars Sean Bean, Radha Mitchell, Carrie-Anne Moss & Malcolm McDowell. Release in 2012.

WORLD WAR Z

Synopsis: A UN representative, writing a report on the great zombie war, interviews survivors in the wake of World War Z.

Based on the Max Brooks novel World War Z which I haven't yet read but definitely will soon. The novel is essentially a collection of interviews with survivors in the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse. The movie's success will probably depend on how faithful it is to the book, after all I don't think anybody wants to see another generic zombie film.
Stars Bradd Pitt, Eric West & Matthew Fox. Release date is set for December 21 2012.

UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING

Synopsis: When human forces discover the existence of the Vampire and Lycan clans, a war to eradicate both species commences. The vampire warrioress Selene leads the battle against humankind.

The fourth Underworld movie sees the return of Kate Beckinsale as Selene, which is great because she is basically the only reason I would even consider watching this. Also starring Charles Dance, Michale Ealy & Kris Holden-Ried. Hits theatres January 2012.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER

Synopsis: President Lincoln's mother is killed by a supernatural creature, which fuels his passion to crush vampires and their slave-owning helpers.

I don't care if this movie ends up being shit, I still want to watch it just to see Honest Abe slaughtering a bunch of vampires. Based on the novel by Seth Grahame-Smith, who also wrote the screenplay. Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch) is directing. Rumour had it that Trent Reznor would be in charge of the score and even have a cameo, but he has unfortunately denied this.
Hits theatres June 21 2012.

NURSE 3D

Synopsis: By day Abby Russell is a dedicated nurse, someone you wouldn’t hesitate to trust your life with. But by night, her real work begins…using her smoldering sexuality she lures cheating men to their brutal deaths and exposes them for who they really are. When a younger nurse starts to suspect Abby's actions and compromises her master plan, Abby must find a way to outsmart her long enough to bring the cheater you’d least expect to justice.

Paz de la Huerta plays a nurse who cares for patients by day, but spends her nights 'targeting and punishing' evil men. Kinda sounds like a female Dexter to me.
Also stars Katrina Bowden, Judd Nelson & Boris Kodjoe. Set for release some time in 2012.

THE BRIAR LAKE MURDERS

Synopsis: A group of rude and insensitive city kids take a weekend vacation to Briar Lake, a picturesque town overlooking a beautiful lake, which to most outsiders would appear to be a peaceful small town. Having zero respect for anyone outside of their group, they are confronted by the hostile and eccentric residents. Following a bizarre experience in the town's diner, they quickly retreat to the protection of their borrowed vacation lake house, where they plan to let loose and celebrate their weekend out of the city. After an unexpected visit from the local police, the long weekend is cut short. Two of the locals have been brutally murdered, and this group of "outsiders" become the prime suspects. When the string of murders spins out of control, the group must come together to unravel Briar Lake's sordid past and uncover the hidden secrets. A vacation is always fun until you die!

Directed by David R. Ellis, this movie is set for an October 5 2012 release. THE BRIAR LAKE MURDERS stars Sara Paxton, Jonathan Jackson, Ivana Milicevic & James Remar.

RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION

Synopsis: Alice fights alongside a resistance movement in the continuing battle against the Umbrella Corporation and the undead.

Not really a huge fan of the RE movies, but as far as videogame adaptations go you could do a lot worse. Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Sienna Guillory & Bingbing Li star. Set for a September 14 2012 release.
